cloudy day blues

hello hello!

I am trying to stay *happy* and energized today despite the rain and fog and gray skies…blech…I swear, cloudy days are one of my least favorite things in the world. I NEED sunlight to make me feel like a real person. It is for this reason that I just could not wake UP this morning! I slept til almost 8:00 when I usually pop up at 6 or 6:30. Then I proceeded to nurse my cloudy day blahhhh-ness with a breakfast consisting of everything in the house. All I wanted to do was wallow and eat! This included oatmeal, toast, spoonfuls of sunflower seed butter, aaaaand a slice of vegan pizza…wtf? I was so full by 9AM when I had to go hop on the bus to go to work. Ridiculousness…

Anywhoooo I am feeling a little better now after drinking coffee all day…so lets recap some workouts hey?! Where did I leave off…

Last Wednesday: Planned to go to the gym after work but fatigue prevailed (I think I was still workin off that b-day hangover *shudder*) so REST DAY

Thursday: 60min elliptical. This was a little too long. I really wanted to do a full hour and pretty much forced myself to. Usually I listen to my body and go for however long feels good. I need to stick to that idea because this time I felt so dead for the last 20ish minutes which resulted in me packing up and getting out of there ASAP after I was done. Usually I feel super energized after cardio workouts and stick around for some strength training, but this time I just felt EXHAUSTED. ah well, live and learn.

Friday: Rest. cloudy day blues hit me hard.

Saturday: 6mi run! PDR since my hip issues! I am feeling much better by the way, still twinges here and there but overall I’m feeling strong. This was actually 2 runs. (does it still count?) 3mi to the gym. Followed by 30min strength training, mostly arms and core. Followed by 3mi home. Felt amazing, I can’t wait to do this more in summer!

Sunday: Rest

Monday: 45 min elliptical with Sara. While watching Dancing with the Stars…Shake it Donald Driver! Packer Pride!

Tuesday: 10min stationary bike hill intervals. yowza. 30min elliptical, 30min strength training – I did all machines this time. I usually use mostly free weights and body strength but that area was so full that I just jumped on random machines. Result? I worked a lot of new muscle groups because I am S-O-R-E today.

Which brings us up to date! I’m hittin’ the gym in T-Minus 2 hours when I get off work. I can’t WAIT. I’ve been so chilled all day because of the weather so I’m super pumped to SWEAT~

Birthday and The Odd Duck

Argh! My poor bloggy has been lacking attention lately! In my defense though, it was a busy weekend and week so far….but here we go!

First things first. I’M 24!!! My birthday was on Monday! Not too eventful…I went for a windy morning run by the river, worked a half day, went to the gym to kill some time before dinner, went out for Indian food with Paul, and then drank to excess. I am not a good drinker anymore, everything after my 2nd shot is just a blur. It’s not like we got crazy, just chatted at The Standard all night. But man was I hungover yesterday. Like ‘lay on the couch/eat/nap/watch 5 episodes of Battlestar Galactica’ hungover. Like ‘skipped my hair appointment that I was so looking forward to’ hungover. Then I struggled through the closing shift at work and afterward Paul INSISTED on going to the bar to catch the Blackhawks game. I was not happy. All I wanted to do was sleep…which I did do for 9 glorious hours last night. Finally!

In other news, Paul and I are still in the process of moving. This week we began the slow process of introducing our cats to each other. We are still keeping them separate, with one staying in one room and the other in another room, but I think in a few more days we’ll be able to let them really meet! Hooray!

My sister’s new restaurant, The Odd Duck, opened on Saturday and my whole family went to the Grand Opening which went SO WELL, I’m so proud of her and her boyfriend for all of the work they put into this project, I think they’re going to do so great. The food is amazing, they’ve been completely booked since they opened, and I’m going to be hosting there on weekends now! Fun, fun! Here’s the website–Odd Duck Restaurant

Lets see what I can remember workout-wise for the last week, shall we!? A test of my memory and recall skills this shall be.

Wednesday: 30min elliptical, some core work

Thursday: Rest, Kelly and Jake came for a visit with new baby Silas 🙂

Friday: 4 and some change miles on the treadmill. 45 min.

Saturday: 35min elliptical, arm strength, and core

Sunday: Rest

Monday: 4.5mi run (Garmin died at some point, so I don’t know my pace/time), 30min elliptical

Tuesday: extreme hangover rest day

Hoping to get to the gym after work tonight, I am in the mood for a good sweat sesh. I’ve got 8 more hours on the clock though so we’ll see how I feel then! 😛

stupid pollen

Either I’m getting sick or my allergies are getting worse. I hope it’s just allergies due to ridiculous pollen this year but I felt so cruddy last night that I skipped my post-work work out. I left work with every intention of going to the gym because I figured it would make me feel better but as my stop approached I decided not to get off the bus until Whole Foods. Hah, I ditched my workout for a salad bar and a Larbar. Oh well I really felt like crap so I’m not worried about it. I needed to pick up some groceries anyway…

Definitely made up for it today, the rest must have done me good because I do feel a little better. I walked EVERYWHERE today! Walked to my internship this morning, walked to the gym, walked to work…I mapped all the walking I did and it was 6.23 miles! Pretty good!! And it’s not even very nice out today! I guess I jsut felt like saving my bus tickets…

Tuesday Workout:

  • 50min elliptical hill intervals. I was in the ZONE!
  • Arm Strength
    • 4×12 hammer curls #8ea
    • 4×12 overhead tricep extensions #8ea
    • 4×12 bentover rows #8ea
    • 3×12 chest flies – flat #8ea
  • 10min stationary bike

I felt really good at the gym today and I think it’s partly because I forced myself to grab a granola bar at Alterra right before my workout. I’ve started to notice a pattern – I tend to feel sluggish during workouts when I haven’t eaten beforehand. I always eat a HUGE breakfast and I tend to think that I will be fine for a midday workout. But even if I eat a big breakfast at 7:30AM, by 1:00PM I do need fuel to get me going during a workout. And today I felt great! I didn’t want to stop! So I think I’ll start trying to pack little things like granola bars and fruit in my bag that I can munch before working out…

Tuesday Eats:

Breakfast

  • Oats with almond milk, almond butter, chia seeds, a banana, and granola
  • The rest of the bag of granola…oops…I’m never buying this kind again, it’s too damn DELICIOUS. and vegan. and gluten free. and sugar free. I can’t remember the name of it right now…I’ll get back to ya.

Lunchy

  • My pre-workout granola bar
  • 1/2 a veggie wrap from the green kitchen (same one as the other day)
  • green monster juice – apple, cucs, lemon, wheatgrass
  • 1/2 bowl lentil soup
  • super energy bar from the coffee shop on my way to work- this bar looked really good but I should have looked at it closer. I like granola bars and fruit and nut type bars. This one was more like a dessert type bar. It had good stuff like raisins, peanut butter, sunflower, flax, and pumpkin seeds, and chocolate…but it was also made with whole wheat flour which gave it that dessertiness.

Dinner

  • Remaining 1/2 veggie wrap
  • Remaining 1/2 bowl lentil soup

atheism and workouts

Happy Easter…If you celebrate it! I do not which just made for another awkward argument with the ‘rents about why I will not go to church with them even though “it would make us and Jesus so happy if you would…” I just don’t think it’s fair to try and guilt your kids into participating in religious ordeals when they don’t hold the same beliefs as you just because it makes you feel warm and fuzzy to have your whole family around as you praise the man in the sky. I am an out athiest and my parents know that so I’m not sure why they still think I belong by their side at church. I gave in and went with them on Christmas which left me fuming and actually strengthened my commitedness to atheism.

ANYWAY…

Friday’s workout:

3.20mi treadmill run…stopped for a few walk breaks = 35min. I was planning on lifting but ended up cutting my workout short because I ran into Carly and she offered to give me a ride home. I didn’t feel like walking back so I said f**k it and left with her

Saturday: REST DAY. Went to the Wheel and Sprocket bike expo with my dad. Didn’t buy anything at the expo but my mom said she’d give me her Trek for 50 bucks! SCORE, her bike is in good shape, I’m so glad I didn’t spend $500 at the expo! I did work up a sweat cleaning my great uncle’s apartment in the afternoon so at least I got my heart rate up a bit.

Sunday: 2-3mi run with my dad in the AM. I’m not really sure how far we went but we were gone about a half hour and their neighborhood is mega hilly. I had a smoothie and felt pretty energetic again so I hopped on the treadmill for 45 minutes of incline walking while watching some weird Amanda Bynes movie where she pretends to be a boy.

some sweatin…some snackin…

I’ve got a whopping two days to catch up on! Well well, I did manage to make it to the gym today and yesterday, but I must say…my energy was a little bit on the low side both times. I’m not letting it get me down though! You can’t live every day jacked up on workout highs!

Anyway, like I said, I made it to Planet Fitness after work last night (I’m LOVIN’ this gym by the way, I’m so glad I joined). 30min on the elliptical actually felt pretty good! No hip pain at all!! Yesssss. I was planning to lift for a bit but the gym was really packed so I went into the 12 minute core area with all the ab machines. There were a lot of people in there too so after about 10min I called it quits, did some planks and walked home to eat pizza with my roomie.

Today I went back to the gym around 1:00 in the afternoon. Felt a little better today partly because I told myself I could stop at TJ Maxx and The Green Market if I got a good workout in.

  • 10min warmup on the stationary bike – hill intervals – yowzers my legs have been achin!
  • 10min core
  • 20min elliptical hill intervals
  • Arm Strength
    • 3×15 bicep curls #8 ea
    • 3×15 tricep kickbacks #8 ea
    • 3×15 bent over rows #8 ea
    • 3×15 front raises #8 ea

Today’s workout felt good but I did feel a bit sluggish. I think part of it may be the very limited tune selection on my Ipod right now. I NEED music to get my energy up and I’m just not diggin the songs I’ve got lately! Gotta get downloading!

Today’s eats were YUMMY YUMMY YUMMY

Breakfast

  • Running late = brownie cliff bar and coffee

Lunch

  • Super dope amazing rad veggie wrap from The Green Market – Sunflower seed spread, avocado, lettuce, cherry tomatoes, onion, sprouts, beets, and carrots.
  • Green Dream juice from the same place – spinach, celery, ginger, and apple all up in there!
  • Homemade fruit and nut bar from the coffee shop

Dinner

  • A scattered mess of food I bought from TJ Maxx. I forgot how amazing TJ Maxx is for food shopping! They had a lot of great stuff for real cheap! I bought chia seeds, granola, muesli, roasted edamame, pasta sauce, and tea. I also bought a pear, an apple, and an orange from the fruit stand in the mall.
  • Officially I had a bowl of muesli with almond milk and chia seeds for dinner
  • And I ate the pear on the side as well as 2 dates and some almond butter for dunking
  • Also included in dinner was much granola snacking and other random snacking around the house. snacks happen youknow…

Yesterday’s eats were not so exciting and I am tired, but for documentation purposes I will say that I bought the same mixed nuts for the 3rd day in a row and also ate the rest of my non-dairy ice cream for breakfast, yes…breakfast. I eat ice cream for breakfast and cereal for dinner. whaaa? I confuse even myself!

back on my feet!

So far my new philosophy is working like a CHARM!

I had an amazing workout last night consisting of:

  • 20min stationary bike hill intervals
  • 20min elliptical hill intervals
  • 10min core

See?! I told you I was going to do whatever I wanted to! I literally made zero plans for my workout…I walked into the gym and did whatever popped into my head! It felt fantastic, so fantastic that afterward I decided to walk home because I had so much energy (almost 4 miles) By then it was after 10 PM but I was STARVING so I ate a whole bag of steamed broccoli and a ton of triscuits with my drunk boyfriend!

Today’s eats:

Breakfast

  • Whole wheat hamburger bun toasted with almond butter and a banana
  • Small bowl of oats with almond milk, chia seeds, and vega powder
  • 1/2 glass OJ
  • FULL glass coffee

Lunch

  • Post-run tropical smoothie from Alterra
  • Hummus wrap from Alterra (with my own additions- onions, veganaise, chia seeds)
  • Some tortilla chips

Dinner

  • Mega couscous salad with sliced almonds, raisins, green pepper from the gas station (I work next to a gas station, hence all the “gas station” meals)
  • Bag o mixed nuts

Today was also fueled by a 4.5 mi run on the Oak Leaf Trail. OH HOW I’VE MISSED THIS TRAIL. I left the house with no Garmin, no phone, no nothin, I didn’t even look at the clock before I left. The only reason I know my distance is because I mapped the run after I got home. It felt so great to just get out and RUN without worrying about my time or pace or distance. I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed a run this much. I was smiling and pumping my arms and singing out loud…yes it was one of THOSE runs. My hips are pretty sore because I don’t think I stretched enough afterward (too excited for my smoothie) but I will live to run another day!!

A new lightness

Monday again! Ugh I had a boozy weekend! I ate lots of food, drank a lot, and am feelin it today. A little bloated, a little tired, a little bit of sugar withdrawl, a little a lot of coffee. But also feeling optimistic because…

I have had a *REVELATION*

I have decided not to attempt the half marathon I signed up for this coming Saturday. Yes I am a little disappointed in myself, yes I keep second guessing myself, yes I’m embarrassed, but honestly I feel like an enormous weight has been lifted from me! I am no longer stressing out about getting in my weekly milage, sticking to a training plan, or keeping weight off. I didn’t realize how much pressure these things were putting on my body and my spirit. I forgot how much I enjoy working out and running FOR FUN and FOR MYSELF. I forgot why I started running in the first place. I don’t need to push myself to the point of injury for an arbitrary distance, race, or time. Not that these things aren’t great goals…I still want to complete a half marathon, but on my terms, when I am ready.

Since I made this decision, I think I have gained a little weight, lost a little fitness, and have cut down on my workouts. And you know what? I FEEL BETTER THAN EVER. During the past few months, if I missed a workout or went on a little brunch binge I would feel so guilty and would beat myself up about it to the point of depression. I am now giving in to my food cravings (not to excess, but if I want cake, I’m eating a piece…) and not feeling bad about it, and I am doing whatever workouts I feel like doing instead of looking at my training schedule and doing exactly what it says even if I don’t want to. I now look forward to meals and workouts instead of seeing them as moments of weakness or anxiety.

I am not an elite athlete. I am a busy person who enjoys running and fitness on my time and I want to keep it that way. I’m going to the gym after work today with no absolutely requirements for my workout. Whatever I feel like doing when I get there…that’s what’s happening! Maybe I’ll just use the tanning bed, who knows! It’s all up to me! 🙂
